Sunderland transfer news, rumours and controversy: Latest updates on deals, signings, loans and contracts

Sunderland AFC remain a major talking point in the Premier League as the March international break draws closer. The Black Cats continue to balance youthful ambition with careful squad planning. After securing an impressive return to the top flight and performing strongly—highlighted by Granit Xhaka urging the team to stay grounded after reaching the 40-point safety mark—the club have already begun planning for the summer transfer window while also securing the futures of key players.

The club strengthened its defensive stability this week after centre-back Dan Ballard committed his long-term future to the Stadium of Light. The Northern Ireland international signed a new contract that will keep him at Sunderland until 2029, with an option for a further year. Sporting director Florent Ghisolfi praised Ballard’s leadership and reliability, describing the 26-year-old as a vital part of Regis Le Bris’ defence since the club’s promotion. His new deal comes during a season in which Sunderland’s solid defending has helped them remain comfortably in mid-table despite early challenges.

Meanwhile, several January signings are still settling into the squad. Winger Nilson Angulo, who joined from Anderlecht for around £17.5m on deadline day, has already shown glimpses of his exciting Ecuadorian talent in limited appearances. Young goalkeeper Melker Ellborg, signed from Malmö, and Ivorian prospect Jocelin Ta Bi from Maccabi Netanya reflect Sunderland’s continued focus on recruiting promising young players, while also providing depth behind first-choice goalkeeper Robin Roefs.

Transfer speculation surrounding the club has also intensified. Sunderland are reportedly leading the race to sign Lorient midfielder Arthur Avom, who is nearing the end of his contract. The versatile Ligue 1 player, valued at about £7.6m, is also attracting interest from Chelsea. A potential double deal has been suggested as the club continues to target players who fit Ghisolfi’s vision of a diverse, energetic squad.

Elsewhere, Sunderland have been linked with Bologna centre-back Jhon Lucumi in a move that could cost around €25m (£21m). Reports from Italy claim the Colombian defender was open to joining the club last summer before Bologna blocked the transfer. Interest could grow again, though the price might rise to €40m if his performances improve further or bigger clubs become involved after the World Cup. Supporters are debating whether breaking the club’s transfer record on a defender would be worthwhile to strengthen their Premier League status.

There has also been speculation about potential attacking additions. Santiago Gimenez, previously linked with clubs such as Feyenoord and AC Milan, has reportedly attracted interest from Sunderland as well as Leeds United. Other rumours suggest the club could attempt a four-player summer recruitment drive under Ghisolfi, with names such as Feyenoord winger Anis Hadj Moussa and Charleroi midfielder Yacine Titraoui mentioned as possible targets to improve wide areas.

However, Sunderland’s transfer activity has not been without controversy. Earlier deals raised questions among fans, particularly Pierre Ekwah’s £5m permanent move to Saint-Etienne, which some supporters felt undervalued the midfielder. Loan moves such as Simon Adingra’s switch to Monaco, which includes a purchase option, and Anthony Patterson’s move to Millwall were seen as part of the club’s effort to manage finances following a summer spending spree that exceeded £155m in 2025. Additionally, reports involving a blackmail scandal connected to striker Brian Brobbey created off-field noise, though Sunderland have not been directly linked to the situation.

Contract negotiations and youth development are also key topics. Winger Tommy Watson has reportedly drawn interest from Brighton, while academy prospects Jenson Jones and Finn Geragusian could attract bids from Championship clubs such as Wrexham. Sunderland remain committed to a data-driven recruitment model that blends experienced players—like the influential Granit Xhaka—with promising young talent.

As Sunderland prepare for upcoming matches, including important fixtures against Brighton and Newcastle, the immediate focus remains on maintaining their Premier League stability. Although no significant moves are expected before the summer window opens, speculation continues to grow. With Regis Le Bris’ side already exceeding expectations this season, the club’s transfer decisions in the coming months could determine whether they push toward European qualification or simply aim to secure another mid-table finish.
