Chelsea are reportedly leading the race to sign Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs, though they would need to raise around £50 million to secure his signature.

Transfer expert Alan Nixon says the Blues are searching for a new first-choice keeper and have been impressed by Roefs’ composed and reliable displays in his first Premier League campaign. The Dutch shot-stopper joined Sunderland on a five-year contract last August after their promotion and has quickly become the club’s number one, taking over from Anthony Patterson.

According to reports, Sunderland would consider selling if their valuation is met, and they are preparing for interest from other top English sides if Roefs continues his strong form. Chelsea are believed to have both the resources and ambition to complete the deal, with any move depending on whether they are willing to match the £50 million asking price. It is also suggested that Roefs would be open to joining if Chelsea qualify for the Champions League, as his career has progressed rapidly since arriving in England.

Despite this, Sunderland remain in a strong bargaining position due to the length of Roefs’ contract and his importance to head coach Régis Le Bris’ project. His potential inclusion in this summer’s World Cup squad could further increase his market value.

Speaking recently, Le Bris praised his goalkeeper’s impact, stressing the importance of having strong players in key defensive positions. He acknowledged Roefs’ lack of experience but highlighted his mental strength and maturity, adding that giving young players opportunities is part of Sunderland’s identity.

Elsewhere, reports claim Sunderland and Leeds United held discussions over a possible move for Galatasaray midfielder Gabriel Sara during the January transfer window. While Sunderland focused mainly on selling players, they also added wingers Nilson Angulo and Jocelin Ta Bi, as well as backup goalkeeper Melker Ellborg to compete with Roefs.

However, Turkish outlet Fotospor reports that both Sunderland and Leeds made approaches for Sara last month, only for their bids to be rejected, as neither the player nor his club found the offers appealing.

Lets wait and see what will happen, all we want is the best for
